If you've got an active family, you know that keeping your home smelling fresh isn't always easy. Febreze is your best friend when it comes to deodorizing furniture, sports equipment, and pet odors. Unfortunately, if your family goes through the Febreze like mine does, you know it can add up and get quite expensive after a while.
Living in a stinky house is not an option, but luckily there is an alternative to racking up expensive Febreze bills. With only a few simple household ingredients, you can easily make your own odor-neutralizing home-freshening spray. Unlike other DIY freshening sprays, this spray is unique in that it doesn't contain any fabric softener. Fabric softeners are good odor neutralizers, but they can leave a residue on your fabrics and can irritate sensitive skin types. So check out this simple recipe and start freshening up your home now!
Get StartedThe two active ingredients in this blend are baking soda and Downy Unstoppables. If you're unfamiliar with Unstoppables, they're small scented beads that you can add to your laundry to add a boost of freshness. You will also need hot water and an empty spray bottle. We'll compare the prices of these items with standard Febreze later on for proof of why you need to try this fresh-spray ASAP!
Once you've acquired your items, it's time to get mixing. Blend the following in a large bowl:
- 1/4 Cup of Downy Unstoppables
- 4 Tablespoons of Baking Soda
- 1 Cup of HOT Water
Aside
from the fresh-smelling boost that the Unstoppables will provide, the
baking soda will also absorb unfavorable odors. Baking soda is also
non-toxic and safe to use around your home. When you're mixing your
ingredients, be sure to use very hot water, as it will speed up the
dissolving process.
Allow the Beads to Dissolve
Once you've blended your ingredients, it should look
something like this. Stir the mixture occasionally, and within about 30
minutes, your Unstoppables beads and baking soda should be totally
dissolved.
Bottle the Freshness
Now that your mixture has dissolved, carefully transfer it
to your spray bottle. Top off the bottle with warm water and shake it
thoroughly. Without the additional water, your blend will be too potent
and thick, and it will just make a mess when you try to spray it. If you
shy away from artificial scents and you'd like a completely natural
homemade freshener, we have more suggestions for you!
Substitute in Essential Oils
Downy Unstoppables smell great, but they're admittedly not
natural or organic. If unnatural perfumes or scents are unwelcome in
your home, you can substitute 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil
for the Unstoppables. Lemon oil works great if you like a lemony fresh
smell!
Label It
Once you've completed your fresh-smelling super-spray,
give it a label and then start chasing those pesky odors away. Save the
rest in a cool, dry storage location for later.
Why Make Your Own?
A bottle of Febreze will cost you approximately $4.99.
This DIY homemade fresh spray will only cost an estimated 60-70 cents a
bottle. Those are real savings you can't afford to pass up.
Mmm, Fresh!
Now that money is no issue, you can spray as liberally as you please for a house that smells like a fresh mountain meadow.
